Mastering
Probably the most overlooked and misunderstood production process is mastering. It is also arguably the most critical process for producing a quality release. Many people get confused regarding the differences between mixing and mastering, so let's first address that confusion. When you mix, you are essentially changing levels and applying processing to the individual elements of the recording (drums, guitar, bass, vocals, etc.) so that they work together in a manner that produces the overall desired balance for all elements of the song. The mixing process produces a 2-track stereo mix-master as a result. Mastering utilizes this mix-master and differs from mixing in several ways. The goal of mastering is to make each song sound as close as possible to the original mix over the broadest possible range of speakers and playback systems, to ensure all songs on the album have a similar and cohesive sonic character, and to raise the overall album volume to the optimal level without compromising the depth of the original mixes. When necessary, the mastering process can also correct some overall problems with the mixes. Song sequence, fades, track indexing, and the encoding of album and track information are additional aspects of the mastering process.

My personal mastering philosophy is "less is more". Unless otherwise instructed to make major corrections, I generally assume that you are pleased with the sound of your own mixes. My goal is to then ensure that the character of your mixes is maintained while correcting overall problematic issues with the mix that may result in tubby or harsh sounding playback on various systems as well as maximizing the overall volume level, balance and flow from song to song.

The JimmyEther.com mastering service is provided at the lowest cost possible in order to help independent artists make the most of their budget and album project. The cost may differ based on the production needs, but it generally runs around $50 per song plus $5 per final master CD-R requested. If you have unusually long or complex tracks, or numerous tracks of very short length, I will quote you an adjusted rate for the project. I can master from various digital formats, including harddrive based mix files, CD-R audio, DAT as well as analog formats such as 15ips 1/4" reel to reel, 7.5ips and 3.25ips 1/4" quarter-track reel to reel, and even stereo cassette. To help you get the most out of your final mixes. I will soon be providing mixing advice in the recording tips section of the site and you can always post recording and mixing questions to the message board. Please feel free to email me using the contact form to let me know about your project and ask any questions.
